Honest answers

Pricing questions, answered straight

Why is there a subscription at all?

The free app costs us almost nothing per user, and we intend to keep it that way. The Premium layers are different: bathymetry tiles, rolling weather-model data and continued development have real ongoing costs. A small subscription — or a one-time lifetime purchase, if you prefer — keeps those layers running without ads, accounts or selling data. There is nothing else funding Marinate.

Is the AIS overlay free or Premium?

AIS is one of the seven Premium layers. Paste a free API key from aisstream.io into settings and Marinate overlays live vessel traffic on your chart, computes CPA/TCPA for every target and raises the collision alarm when a ship will pass too close, too soon. The safety features that don't depend on a live data feed — one-tap MOB with auto-return and the anchor alarm — are free on every plan.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Subscriptions will be managed entirely by the App Store or Google Play, so you'll cancel the same way you cancel anything else — in your store's subscription settings, in a few taps. You keep Premium until the end of the period you've paid for. Cancel during the 14-day trial and you're never charged at all.

What stays free forever?

Everything you need to navigate: the full nautical chart with buoys, lights, depths and marinas; live GPS with instruments; routes, markers, track recording and the trip logbook; Go-To navigation; tides, currents and tap-anywhere weather; offline chart downloads per area; GPX import and export. And the core safety features — one-tap MOB with auto-return and the anchor alarm — are free on principle, not as a teaser.

Do the prices here come from the app stores?

Yes. All purchases will go through the App Store or Google Play once Marinate launches, and the price you'll actually pay is the one your store shows — converted to your local currency, with any local tax applied by the store. The figures on this page are the USD reference prices; small regional differences are set by the stores, not by us. We never see your payment details.

What happens to Premium when I'm offline?

It keeps working. Marinate is offline-first, and a chartplotter that quits mid-passage because it can't phone home would be worthless. Downloaded charts, depth shading and your recorded data stay available at sea; your subscription status is simply re-checked the next time you're back online. Layers that need a live connection by nature — AIS traffic and fresh weather runs — resume when you have signal again.
