Shore forecasts describe the beach, not your anchorage. In Marinate the chart itself is the interface: tap the passage, the headland, or tomorrow's anchorage and get the forecast for that exact position — no place names, no guessing which coastal zone you are in.

Each tap opens an hour-by-hour table you can scan at a glance:

  • Wind and gusts — direction and speed, so you can see when the gradient fills in or dies.
  • Wave height and period — the difference between a wet ride and a comfortable one.
  • Air temperature — for deciding between shorts and foulies.

Meteogram

See the shape of the day, not just a number

A single wind figure hides the story. The meteogram plots wind, gusts and waves as curves across the forecast window, so trends jump out: the afternoon sea breeze, the front arriving overnight, the two-hour window when the swell drops.

It is the fastest way to answer the questions that actually matter on board — when should we leave, when does it get lumpy, and how long does the good window last.

  • Wind and gust curves together, so gust spread is obvious.
  • Wave height on the same timeline as the wind that drives it.
  • Wind direction arrows along the top, so a shift stands out as clearly as a build.

The big picture

Watch the weather move across your chart

Two Premium layers turn the chart into a synoptic view: an animated wind field you can scrub through time, and pressure isobars that show you the system behind the wind.

The wind-field layer draws the forecast as a field of wind arrows over the chart itself, colour-coded by strength. Drag the time slider — or press play — and watch the week unfold: the arrows veer as a front comes through, turn amber where the breeze accelerates past a cape, and fade where the lee of an island goes soft.

Because it is drawn over your own chart — with your routes and markers in place — you are not translating from a separate weather app. You see the wind exactly where your course line runs.

Pressure isobars Premium

Isobars are the sailor's shorthand for what happens next. Tightly packed lines mean wind on the way; a slack gradient means a quiet day. Marinate puts the synoptic picture — isobars, highs and lows, and the fronts between them — right in the app, so you can connect the big system to your own patch of water.

Read them alongside the animated wind field and the meteogram and you get three views of the same forecast — the system, the flow, and the timeline.

Tides & currents

Time the tide, not your luck

Tidal water rewards timing. Marinate's tides and currents view shows the rise and fall for your area, so you can plan the departure that carries you over the bar, the passage that rides a fair current, and the anchorage depth at low water tonight.

Straight talk

Weather needs a connection. Your charts don't.

Marinate is offline-first, but forecasts are the one thing no app can invent on board. Weather data — the tap-anywhere tables, meteograms, wind fields, isobars, tides and currents — is fetched live and needs an internet connection.

Out of coverage, Marinate keeps navigating on downloaded charts with full GPS, routes, tracks and alarms. It just cannot conjure a fresh forecast from thin air — and we would rather tell you that plainly than pretend otherwise.

Before you lose signal: check the forecast for your whole passage while you still have coverage, and treat any forecast as guidance, not gospel. For extended offshore passages, carry a dedicated offshore weather source.

Where does the forecast data come from?
Marine forecasts — wind, gusts, waves and temperature — come from Open-Meteo, fetched live for the exact coordinates you tap on the chart. Tides and currents are shown in their own dedicated view.
Which weather features are free?
Tap-anywhere forecasts, the hourly table, the meteogram, and tides & currents are free — no account, no tracking. The animated wind field and pressure isobar layers are part of Premium.
Does weather work offline?
No — forecasts need an internet connection. Charts, GPS navigation, routes, tracks and all safety alarms keep working fully offline; check the forecast before you leave coverage.
Can I see the weather along a planned route?
Yes — tap any point along your route line to get the forecast there. With Premium's animated wind field you can also scrub the time slider and watch the forecast wind evolve over your whole course on the chart.
