Marinate

This policy explains what data Marinate handles, where it lives, and which third-party services the app talks to when you use online features. Marinate is built offline-first and privacy-first by design: the simplest way to protect your data is to never collect it in the first place.
1. What we don't collect
Marinate does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data. Specifically, we do not collect:
- Your name, email address, or any account credentials — there are no accounts.
- Your location or track history — GPS positions are processed on your device only.
- Usage analytics, telemetry, session recordings, or crash reports.
- Advertising identifiers, cookies for tracking, or device fingerprints.
- Your markers, photos, notes, routes, logbook entries, or anchorage records.
We operate no server that receives user data. There is no backend account system, no cloud sync service, and no analytics pipeline.
2. What stays on your device
Everything you create or configure in Marinate is stored locally on your device, in the app's on-device database (IndexedDB). This includes:
- Markers, including any photos and notes you attach to them.
- Planned routes, recorded tracks, replays, and your trip logbook.
- Anchor alarm settings and your anchorage log.
- Downloaded offline chart areas.
- App settings such as language, units, day/night mode, and instrument layout.
- Any service keys you enter yourself, such as an aisstream.io API key.
Because this data lives only on your device, deleting the app permanently deletes it. We cannot recover it for you — and we cannot read it either. Use GPX export to keep your own backups.
3. Online services the app talks to
Some features fetch data from third-party services while you are online. These are direct, standard network requests from your device to the service. Like any such request, the service can see your IP address and what was requested (for example, which map tiles or which forecast coordinates). Marinate adds no identifiers of its own to these requests.

Each service has its own privacy policy that governs how it handles requests. If you stay offline — using downloaded charts and on-device navigation — none of these requests are made at all.
4. Boat instruments (SignalK / NMEA)
If you connect Marinate to your boat's SignalK or NMEA instruments, the connection runs over your boat's local network between your device and your instrument server. Depth, wind, speed, and heading readings are displayed live and are not sent anywhere else.
5. Device permissions
- Location — used to show your live boat position, heading, and speed on the chart, and to power navigation, track recording, the anchor alarm, and MOB. Positions are processed and stored on your device only.
- Camera / photos — used only when you attach a photo to a marker. Photos are stored locally with the marker.
Both permissions are optional and requested only when the relevant feature needs them. You can revoke them at any time in your device settings.
6. Sharing and export
Sharing is under your control and serverless. When you export a route, track, or markers as a GPX file, the file is generated on your device and goes wherever you send it. When you share via a deep link, the shared data is encoded into the link itself — there is no server-side copy for anyone to access. Share links only reveal what you choose to put in them, to the people you send them to.
7. Purchases
Marinate's core navigation and its core safety alarms (one-tap MOB and the anchor drag alarm) are free forever and require no payment details. If you choose to subscribe to Premium, the purchase is processed entirely by Apple's App Store or Google Play — the same billing you use for any other app. We never see or store your payment information; Marinate only receives confirmation from the store that Premium is active. Apple's and Google's own privacy policies apply to the transaction.
8. Children
Marinate collects no personal data from anyone, including children. The app is a navigation aid intended for skippers and crew.
9. Changes to this policy
If we ever change how Marinate handles data — for example, by adding an optional cloud sync feature — we will update this policy, change the date at the top, and describe the change plainly before it takes effect. Any future feature that sends data off your device will be opt-in.
10. Contact — and who “we” are
Marinate is an independently developed app. “We” in this policy means the developer who publishes Marinate on the App Store and Google Play, and who acts as the data controller for the little this policy covers.
